By grandparenting 13 years ago3 Comments

The following review authored by Gail Welborn appeared in the Seattle Examiner.com on January 20, 2011:

Seattle, WA author, Lydia Harris’ Prepare My Heart for Grandparenting reviewed in November, offers a bible study for grandparents with insights and practical suggestions. However, Grandparenting with a Purpose offers specific prayer examples and challenges readers to network with other grandparents through Christian Parenting Network, http://www.christiangrandparenting.net/ Review below:

Grandparenting with a Purpose, by Lillian Penner, 2010, Crossbooks Publishing, 144 Pages, ISBN-13: 978-1615076116, $11.95

Our nation is in a spiritual and moral decline, according to Lillian Penner, author of Grandparenting with a Purpose. She asks if readers are prepared to battle for the hearts, minds and souls of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Since the battle is spiritual the weapons are too with prayer the spiritual warfare command center. I consider her book a grandparent’s “call to prayer.”

Lillian gives the example of Esther who stood in the gap for the Israelites when their lives were threatened then asks readers to “stand in the gap” for their grandchildren.

Divided into three segments, chapter topics include sharing your faith, intercessory prayer, fruit of the spirit” and more. The third section includes prayers for school, choices and God’s protection. She stresses the importance of good relationships with grandchildren’s parents, which is an issue for some.

Along with author’s tips and prayer suggestions I particularly liked the photo journal page similar to the grandchild in focus pages in The Grandmother’s Bible. Fill-in-the-blank sheets include room for e-mail, telephone, birthday, school grade, church, friends, favorite activities and character strengths information along with a picture.

She and her husband participate in Grandparents@Prayer, an intercessory prayer group that meets one or more times a month. She challenges readers to start a local “Grandparents@Prayer” group. For more information e-mail Lillian: pennerlp@gmail.com

The author also belongs to Christian Grandparenting Network, a “vehicle for grandparent networking.” For more information: http://www.christiangrandparenting.net/

My grandmother “stood in the gap” and raised me when no one else would. That affords me a special appreciation for Lillian’s book.
