Summer Activity-Grandchildren Delighted with Birdhouses

By grandparenting 12 years ago6 Comments

During the summer months as the children are out of school many grandparents have the opportunity to go on vacation with their grandchildren or do special activities with them.

This last week my husband built birdhouses with our nine and eleven years old granddaughters. He pre-cut the pieces of wood ahead of time so they were ready for the girls to start nailing and assembling the pieces of wood for the birdhouses. They had so much fun designing the front of their birdhouse with their own unique design.

The girls were so proud of their carpentry skills and had such a good time building their birdhouses with their grandfather’s help. I could not tell who had the most fun, grandpa or the granddaughters.

Summer is a wonderful time to spend time with our grandchildren for sleepovers, trips, projects, cooking, crafts, or whatever. Our grandchildren grow up so fast, it is important that we take advantage of the time we can spend with them.

I am interested to know what activities you have done with your grandchildren this summer. I would appreciate it if you would please share some of your summer activities you have done with your grandchildren in the comment section below the blog.

Grace, 7, and little sister Fiona, 6, received 18″ dolls for Christmas from the other grandmother. I am the grandmother – sewing teacher and each one made shorts for modesty for wee Luna and Sabrina and then just in time for family vacation, they sewed sleeping bags and pillows to take along for the dolls. They were so proud to learn to provide with their own hands just what their dolls needed and by sewing on the machine just several stitches at a time, they were able to make straight seams and do it safely. All I had to do was cut the fabric and sew in the zippers. They now realize when I sew them something, it takes lots of time but is so satisfying.

    Eileen,
Thank you so much for your comment. It sounds like your granddaughters had a great time preparing their dolls for the family vacation. What a precious memory for you, their grandmother.

2 grandchildren (Jake, 6 and Lily nearly 4) live in California and one in Virginia (Landon, 10 months) (moving to Colorado). They and their parents were all here over the July 4 holiday. I set up one side of our garage with all the Barbie toys we had saved over the years (many). Upstairs our living room was converted to “little people” for the youngest to play with. I complain about saving these toys but am so glad to pull them out for their yearly visit. I feel the playful pleasure as much as they do. I even see their mothers down there playing too. What fun to see the past come alive to make the present so joy-filled.

Thank you for your comment, Pat. I am so happy you had a great time when you grandchildren came to visit. It paid to save the toys, didn’t it.
    Bless you,
    Lillian

This has been a science summer for us. We’ve been doing lots of science experiments and also some nature activities when it is cool enough to get outside!
