New Mother is thankful for her Mother’s Prayers

By grandparenting 4 years agoNo Comments

Becoming a mother has been a rollercoaster of emotion, from the first positive test strip to now nineteen months into having my precious baby boy in my arms. I was instantly overcome with a feeling of fear and unpreparedness when I first discovered I was going to be a mother. I remember calling my mom, terrified, and allowing her to calm me yet, oh so excited, bringing peace into my heart. I knew in those first moments she already loved my child, and by the time he was born, he would be covered in so many prayers that I did not have to worry about a thing.

Being raised by a praying mother gave me a sense of security my entire life. Like most everyone on the planet, I did not have a perfect childhood.  She always reassured me in challenging circumstances with her dedication to covering me in prayer. She taught me at a very young age that the Lord is still listening. He cares for us, and that when we have God on our side, there is nothing we cannot do. These foundational beliefs have come to be the most important lessons of my life as I journey through this new chapter of motherhood.

Not only did my mom teach me to pray and cover me with prayer herself, but she also surrounded my life with other women who have prayed for me. She taught me that although the Lord hears each prayer we ever speak, there is strength in numbers. Matthew 18:20 tells  us, “Where two or three come together to pray in my Name, I am with them.” My mom helped this verse come to life for me by giving me a support system of women who would come along with me to cover my life in prayer.

One of these praying women I lovingly consider to be my spiritual grandmother. In the early stages of my pregnancy, she gave me a book called “Praying Through Your Pregnancy.” This book gave a week by week prayer guide to connect with my child and learn to pray for every aspect of his life. During that time, I prayed for his personality, that he would be a peaceful person with a worshipping heart and blue eyes( just for fun- to match mommy). When he was born, he was instantly the most peaceful baby any of us had ever experienced. As he is older, he loves to dance and sing to worship music and even has a favorite worship song. And you guessed it. My interracial baby has the most piercing blue eyes I’ve ever seen.

The power of a praying mother has been instrumental in my life. She taught me the most crucial aspect of being a mom, praying over my children. The world I raise my son in will have its challenges, but I trek on in confidence because of my mother’s example. Her prayers consistently cover both my son and me.

The greatest gift a grandmother can leave is a legacy of prayer.
